After Thought

Betty Friedan makes an interesting comment in "The Problem That Has No Name." She writes, "Department-store buyers reported that American women, since 1939, had become three and four sizes smaller. 'Women are out to fit the clothes, instead of vice-versa,' one buyer said." This is very much true, and it has a great deal to do with today's trends. What's in right now are crop tops, skin tight leggings, skin tight "bodycon" dresses, high waisted short shorts, and skin tight skinny jeans. If girls want to be fashionable, they have to have flat stomachs and thinner legs. If baggy clothes were "in" right now, I wonder if females would still be so body conscious. There will probably always be some degree of self-consciousness in regards to body image for some females regardless of the trends, but today's trends specifically are geared to girls with thin bodies and that can only contribute to body image problems.
