Is this real?
Ok so this post has nothing to do with feminism but everything to do with racism, but I decided to post this on this blog because I feel completely offended right now and need to vent. Ok so, I was reading an article on PsychologyToday.com and came across this quote, "Anyway, back on the farm, well the plantation actually, the powerful Negro slave spiritual is not a coincidence. The slaves sang those deep abdominal songs because there were no crack houses, Krispy Kreme Donuts, or McDonald's on the plantations." My first thought: Excuse me?! My second thought: This can't be real. My third thought: I have to accept this is a serious article and that it is deeply offensive. I really am not used to coming across ignorance such as that displayed in this quote, so I really tried to make an excuse for the author. Maybe he was kidding? Ok, even if he was kidding, it's not funny. I can't believe PsychologyToday.com would publish something with such a strong offensive statement in it. Slaves sang spirituals for many reasons, and one was because they were suffering. I doubt their suffering stemmed from the lack of crack and donuts. I guess black people don't need spirituals today because there are plenty of McDonald's and crack houses scattered around. Again, I find myself asking, "Is this guy for real?"
